Mission
The mission of the Northwest Arkansas Workers' Justice Center (NWAWJC) is to improve conditions of employment for low-wage workers in northwest Arkansas by educating, organizing, and mobilizing them, and calling on people of faith and the wider region to publicly support the workers' efforts.
List of Accomplishments
- Assisted 800 workers in a Bentonville poultry processing plant
to get their employer to provide safety equipment. A worker
came to the workers center-he had lost his eyesight after being
splashed with hazardous chemicals while cleaning the plant.
He and other workers were never given safety goggles nor informed
of the hazardous nature of the cleaning agents. Workers Center
staff arranged a meeting between the worker and local OSHA staff.
The center assisted the worker in filing a complaint with OSHA,
which found workers in the plant were handling dangerous chemicals
without basic safety equipment, and that workers were not aware
about the substances they were using. The plant was fined for
its violation of the law, and all the workers were given information
on the chemicals, how to work with them, and protective equipment.
- Held workshops to train at least 1,000 workers on their rights
in the workplace.
- Assisted in 300 cases of workplace abuse.
- Helped workers recover $40,000 in back wages, safety and health,
and discrimination claims.
- Assisted in organizing workers at Rockline Industry in support
of their claims of illegal English-Only rules. This case has
resulted in a high profile case with a respected civil rights
attorney.
